10 Things We Learned From Snoop Dog’s Mancave

Wednesday, 30 November 2011

What’s left to do when you’re America’s most influential rapper, made money, movies and a music video with Katy Perry, beaten a murder rap, been banned from entry to Australia and have your own reality TV show called Father Hood? If you’re Snoop Dogg, you build a man cave at your LA home with help from the DIY Network’s man cave experts – and being Snoop Dogg, it is so awesome that there are ten things other prospective man-cavers can learn from it.

1: It must have a door only you can open. Snoop Dogg’s door has a code on the lock that only he knows. “You got to have the door – it’s the first thing to the man cave. If you’ve got a door that’s opening and closing, it’s not a man cave,” said Snoop Dogg.

2: It must be self sufficient. Your man cave should be stocked with the stuff you want to drink, watch and eat – or failing that, a land line to the nearest Denny’s.

3: It must be clear whose man cave this is – Snoop Dogg leaves no one in any doubt with a huge painting of himself on the wall.

4: It must have something really awesome. Snoop Dogg has a couch made out of the fender of a 1961 Cadillac. It also has some shiny awards stacked around the place, so make space for those trophies.

5: It must have the biggest flat screen TV on the block. Two of them, in fact.

6: It must be politically incorrect. That means Men Only, no women, no children. If you find Lego on the floor it better belong to you.

7: You must help build it yourself. Even Snoop Dogg and his pals had to use power tools. This is important because you want to feel your sweat – and maybe some blood and tears – went into it.

8: It must reflect who you are. Some man caves have been styled as biker dens, golf training courses, strip dives, video game parlors, pool halls and even indoor rock climbing venues. It’s all good. Snoop Dogg’s man cave is a laid back retreat where he can just be himself.

9: It won’t harm your marriage. Just having a place where you can go and hang out with your pals without worrying about your language, your appearance or the kids can actually improve your relationships in the main house.

10:  It can be anywhere, in a basement, garage, or in Snoop Dogg’s case, a shed that housed plastic chairs. If you don’t have room in the main house, and no basement, you can build a shed, or get really creative and use a trailer, old bus or even a railway carriage. Whatever works for you is what man-caving is all about.

Snoop Dogg’s man cave is a reflection of who he is, and what he has achieved. When planning your man cave, you can celebrate yourself with trophies, photos, collections or anything else that makes you who you are – and if you are really a Klingon warrior lost in the 21st Century Earth, your man cave can reflect that too. There are no rules for man caves – that’s why men love ‘em.
